All About Basketball Uniforms

What is really the purpose of basketball uniforms? Well, they give the team a sense of identity, of belonging. For the people watching, they know who belongs to which team even if they can't recognize the players by face or they are too far away to be able to see clearly. This is an even better way of identification when you are watching a game of basketball on TV. For the player, wearing his team's colors is a sense of pride and achievement. It tells everyone around him that he has made the cut and is an important part of the team.

Are there any standards that a basketball uniform has to adhere to? Well, the uniform is made up of a jersey or tank top, the shorts, the sneakers and the socks. Today, the materials used for the uniforms tend to be made of lightweight materials and they are moisture-wicking. So it helps with moisture accumulation and temperature control. One can't really wear thick, unwieldy uniforms and play a fast game like basketball.

Today, all the major basketball teams have their own designer uniforms with their distinctive logos and styling. On the back, each player has his name and number and there will always be additional uniforms available that everyone can use. More often than not, one finds that uniforms are changed every season. Today, color coding has become the rule, especially for basketball varsities and one finds that the visiting team usually wears dark colors while the home team uses a lighter color.

Now let's look at the different styles of uniforms. Most uniforms are made for comfort and the textile chosen has to take into account that the players perspire a lot. So you find that uniforms are made from rayon, polyester or nylon – all synthetic materials. Some uniforms are made of satin. One usually finds that contrasting colors are used in the styling of the uniforms. Many of the big teams have their own distinctive colors.

The necklines can be round or V-shaped and the tops could be sleeveless or with cap sleeves. Some teams like to have it in mesh to allow for airing so they feel cooler. The shorts have drawstrings or elastic bands at the waist.

Of course, when it comes to color, basketball uniforms have an almost limitless choice. It is up to the team co-coordinators to decide on the colors and the designs for the team players.

The uniform is a very important aspect in the culture surrounding basketball as they carry the team colors and a sense of pride for players and fans alike. That aside it is also of vital importance that the basketball uniforms allow the players freedom of movement and utmost comfort so that they do not interfere with game play.
